  • The Astronauts and ZoundsDogtail Cabaret19:30PM - 01:30AM

TWO LEGENDARY BANDS OF THE BRITISH UNDERGROUND
    Live:
Dogtail Cabaret, a new alternative entertainment concept, takes off at Proud Camden, on Tuesday, 2nd February, 2010, with performances by two of Britain's most celebrated pioneers of anarcho-punk and hippy music, The Astronauts and Zounds. Led by charismatic frontmen Mark Astronaut and Steve Lake, respectively, this will be a rare big stage performance by the enigmatic bands in recent years. They will be joined by British Jazz saxophone legend Lol Coxhill.

7.00 PM - DJ REDKINA + ACCOUSTIC IMPROVISATIONISTS
Extravagant female DJ Redkina, rooting from Eastern Europe (Ukraine) delivers the diversity of her music through a playful dialogue with acoustic accompanists. Her music ranges from funk to contemporary jazz, electronic to avant-garde symphonic, instrumental to experimental. She will also provide nuanced interludes between live acts, reflecting the diversity of the night. She will be accompanied by Tristan Shorr on percussion and Nahum Mantra on Theramin and guitar.

7:30PM - KENJI YOSHIDA - ARTIST OF THE SOUL (FILM PREMIER)
Stonedog Productions premiere their extraordinary biopic of the great Japanese artist and former Kamikaze pilot, Kenji Yoshida, who dedicated all his entire body of work to peace and love. Produced and Directed by Ishmael Annobil, Kenji Yoshida - Artist of the Soul was invited to screen at UNESCO in October 2008, within the context of the Yoshida's testimonial exhibition, Vie Et Paix. It is scheduled for a Japan premiere this summer.

    8:30PM - ZOUNDS (LIVE MUSIC)
Legendary English underground band Zounds first came to prominence in the early 1980s with a string of independent chart hits on Rough Trade and Crass Records. Growing out of the squatter communities in London, they quickly became key figures in the burgeoning anarcho-punk scene and toured Britain and Europe with contemporaries such as Crass, The Birthday Party, Poison Girls, The Mob, and many others. Their Rough Trade album 'The Curse Of Zounds' is now seen as a classic of the genre and one of the most inspirational albums of the post-punk period. Songwriter and lead singer Steve Lake is notoriously reclusive and can only rarely be persuaded to come out and play. When not playing with Zounds, Steve Lake can be found performing across all genres of traditional and experimental music and spoken word. Lance Hahn in Maximum R'nR' described his solo performances as; "At times like the Bad Seeds' more sombre moments. Other times, it's somewhere between Kurt Weill and a Fellini soundtrack" - Maximum Rock n Roll.

10:00 PM - THE ASTRONAUTS and FRIENDS (LIVE MUSIC) + LOL COXHILL
Mark Astronaut, a cult figure amongst those in the know since the late 70s, is frequently cited as one of the greatest lyricists of our time. His impassioned and powerful live performances really need to be seen to be believed. The stage is Mark Astronaut's life. Juxtaposing dark tales of modern day suburbia with real, honest music that refuses to be pigeonholed, The Otters are one of a handful of bands who genuinely manage to defy categorization: progressive, experimental, and powerful, they give Mark the perfect backing, with Mark providing the poetic anarchy. Mark Astronaut is the subject of a new documentary feature by director Matt Oaten and Producer Tali Clarke of Stonedog Productions. Mark Astronaut will be playing three solid sets under various guises and with different sets of musicians, friends, and bands, including his proteges, and also a duet with legandary Jazz saxophonist LOL COXHILL. This historical set will be preceded by a teaser of the film about Mark Astronuat.

11.30PM - NII AYIKWEI PARKES (POETRY)
Ghanaian poet and writer Nii Ayikwei Parkes is an unusual breed. Respected internationally both as a performer and a published writer, he has performed and run workshops all in Africa, The Americas and Europe. His work is described as "passionate and painful, by turns sharp, reflective, evocative, and transfixing". In performance, he has a unique voice that engages and challenges in equal measure. His skilful interweaving of his own breath and silences, with the words he utters, creates a unique web within which he enchants.
12:00 PM - ONE DRUM (LIVE MUSIC).
A high class Ghanaian royal drum troupe from Ghanaian Diaspora, founded by Nii Abass Dodoo, nephew and student of the internationally renowned master drummer, Mustapha Tettey Addy. One Drum will be playing a telling ancestral repertoire, interpreted by a traditional dancer.
    1:00AM - DJ REDKINA + ACCOUSTIC IMPROVISATIONISTS

    Dead Delta

    +
    Awful Things DJs

Russian Roulette, brought to you by the thoroughly disgraceful duo of Mark and Ed, returns to Proud Galleries Camden once again on the 9th February to bring you some of the finest bands and some of the most atrocious behavior that can be witnessed in London at the moment. This is going to be another big one!

This month's DJ action comes courtesy of the now legendary (and in some places now actually barred) Awful Things who will be spinning vinyl of the usual and unusual variety throughout the night to keep your ears entertained.

And taking to the stage live we present to you........

    Bad For Lazarus www.myspace.com/badforlazarus

Brighton 5 piece bad for Lazarus, featuring Rich Fownes, formally of 80s matchbox B-line Disaster, bring their violent, vicious, nasty pop down to Russian Roulette and its going to be a mess.

"With an impressive disregard for sounding like anything that's been released this decade, Bad For Lazarus just want to bring the rock and bring it hard. Harder than us, and harder than you"-FHM

"This is fuzzy genius at its very best" - Artrocker

"I don't remember the last time I saw a band this bad" ~ Sandman

    In The Black  www.myspace.com/intheblackband

In The Black make rock n roll music the way it should be done. It is raw, energetic, genuine and there is a good reason for it.

What other things can be said that haven't been heard before, this music is pure and honest rock n roll that has a message if you want to find one. Sometimes we have to pull ourselves together and fight for what we want and believe in, for the exact reason we started making music in the first place. This passion is being echoed amongst more and more of us, enough is enough. In The Black are a gang for the downturn in this modern society to listen up to, change is coming.
    Continued.....

Their infamous live performances leave the stage in ruins as blood, beer and sweat coat the remains of smashed and battered instruments. Seeped in passion and honesty, and coated with a thick layer of London dirt, the music comes straight from the heart of every underground gutter punk club, without ignoring the impact of an unforgettable chorus.

    "Retro-swelter rock goodness" - Rocksound

"Sparring riffs, knee jerking brittleness grafted on to a raw and potent undercarriage of alarmingly infectious boot blistering boogie - dare you resist." ROUGH TRADE

    The Dead Delta www.myspace.com/thedeaddelta

Full on ballsy, stonesy, downright dirty blues. You've heard it all before but these guys do it better. The Dead Delta are the latest in a long line of bands since the '60's to take the rock and mix it with it with the blues and bang it out loud and proud.
"Rock 'n' Roll in its purest form" - Square Music
"Classic British invasion rock, fuelled by blues and R&B, definitely a band to look out for." - Mary Jayne Zemer, Sandman

    Your Kids  www.myspace.com/yourkids

Your kids are 2 Cousins & a friend from the emerald isle. Formed late 2008 a hastily recorded demo garnered them an Irish mini tour and a legion of fans. With sights set for London they relocated to the big city and with influences including The Felice Brothers, Thin Lizzy, The Band, & The Bee's we can see these kids going far.

New single "Runs in my family/Looking Down" scheduled for a February 2010 release.

"Dark post punk with a hint of folk" - Little Sparks

Listen out for the noise of distorted guitars and wretched self-expression. Follow it down a dark alley, open the door and peer inside... It's like a cross between the Mad Hatter's Tea Party and New Year's Eve aboard the Jolly Roger.

Grab yourself a rum and coke and get stuck in. Welcome to the relentless riot that is Russian Roulette!

we book a fistful of bands who you wouldn't usually see away from headline shows, stadium tours or falling out the pages of the your favorite tabloids and give you four of them all in one night, backed by the best DJs around.

    I BLAME COCO (live) + JAY AND THE BOYS (live) + BABESHADOW (live)Smash & Grab19:30PM - 02:30AM

    ::::::::::::::::THURSDAY FEBRUARY 11TH :::::::::::::::

    '''''''''''''''SMASH LIVE - 7.30PM to 11PM'''''''''''''''

    I BLAME COCO
The 17 year old Coco is preparing to record her début album in Jamaica, an album thought to be heavily influenced by reggae. And if the views of anyone who saw this gig are anything to go by, it, and she, are due to be massive. 'Brit music scene'
    myspace.com/iblamecoco

    JAY AND THE BOYS
'Jay is surely set to make the ladies swoon. His songs have already been topping Internet charts and attracting rave reviews for his live sets, I reckon its definitely his breakthrough year' - Gordon Smart, Sun Newspaper
    myspace.com/jayandtheboys

    BABE SHADOW
London's Babe Shadow is a band that leaves just the tunes and nothing more. While The Music may not fit the hustle and bustle of the city, they are not necessarily out of place either, especially with the advent of such new folk stars like Johnny Flynn, Mumford and Sons, and Noah & the Whale. While this may be a lazy comparison to make, it's a fine place to start, although the band will likely show us that they don't quite fit in anywhere.

ILUVLIVE will occupy the main room for our twice yearly Specials. The infamous ILUVLIVE Specials will now feature the best acts that have performed at ILUVLIVE over the previous six months alongside a headline act.

  • Safari, House of Strange, Foreign OfficeThis Playground Records19:30PM - 01:30AM

This Playground Records revolutionises the last Monday of every month bringing to Proud a night of promise and potential - showcasing live music from the biggest bands of tomorrow and fusing with art to create an enchanting, frenetic experience not to be easily forgotten.

    Safari

Forming out of the ashes of Model Horror, this brand spanking new 5 piece Safari  build on their history with slick, synth-based, intelligent music. Guitars interplay beautifully with a now almost ubiquitous synthesised basis made new. The result is a selection of wonderfully haunting, uplifting tracks.

    House of strange

More than just a band, the House of Strange are a growing troop of creative types determined to turn the act of making music into a fully interactive experience. They are led by Ash Gardner, best known as the producer of Noah and the Whale's top 5 single "Five Years Time".  Ash, who relocated to Bow after a childhood in the jungles of south-east Asia, has also recorded releases by Mumford and Sons, Emmy the Great, Jeremy Warmsley, Three Trapped Tigers, Stricken City, The Mules and members of the Fence Collective to name a few. He is the producer of the music for BBC Radio 4 panel show the Museum of Curiosity, written by Bill Bailey and has recently produced and written the theme tune for Flight of the Conchords (Rhys Darby) new radio show.

    Foreign Office

Welcome to the new decade. A time for change. Optimism. Hope. Or the stark realisation that's a load of rubbish and that we're still in the same position we were last decade. Never fear though, because here are Foreign Office. Whilst they can't promise that the teenies will be any better than the naughties they can make sure that you'll have some very good times courtesy of some intelligent, superbly crafted tunes that have a seductive duality. Combining dance and house influenced beats with some Numan-esque electro, soulful riffs and dazzling wordsmithery, Foreign Office are something more than a bit out of the ordinary. You can hear Roxy Music, Talking Heads, Hot Chip and a variety of other influences in the mix but what Foreign Office ultimately come out with is pure, grin-inducing idiosyncrasy.

In the South Gallery there will be a compelling mixture of electro-fuelled party anthems from All Night Long DJ's Ben & Gaz playing the best tracks of yester-year to keep everyone on the dance floor. Think big hair and big hits spanning the last four decades from the likes of Madonna, Starship, Kenny Loggins to name but a few!

Tickets available on the door only

£5 before 9pm/ £8 after with guestlist or flyer

    Guest listing closes at 3pm!
